Wildewood Golf

I recently visited a great gem in our ward this July; the Wildewood Golf Course. Carved out of the Fort Garry Forest, this nine-hole course is an important asset in our area. Unfortunately my day was cut short due to lightning and rain but I look forward to going back in the future!

Community recreation spots and green spaces within our neighborhoods are important to the health and wellness of everyone. I am a strong supporter of city park recreation initiatives in Winnipeg. Municipal golf tournaments on our public courses are not only a great way to bring newcomers into our neighborhoods; but a way to participate together in an activity that leads us towards an active future.

Our City, My Community

Hello,

The other day when campaigning, I was asked where I have lived within the city. I am fortunate to say that I have lived in a variety of locations within Winnipeg since moving here in 1986. We currently live in a side by side in Osborne Village. I feel fortunate that I found a great place, that I have renovated and updated over the past 9 years.

While I was born in Winnipeg, I was lucky enough to be raised in the town of Amaranth. Those were special days – lots of time spent with extended family and a strong sense of community.

When it was time for high school, my parents wanted me to attend a Catholic school in Winnipeg. During this time I lived with my cousins in East Kildonan and traveled back and forth from Amaranth to Winnipeg every weekend via Greyhound. My cousins moved to a bigger home in Transcona and I therefore got to know route 47 quite well.

After my parents separated I then lived in South St. Vital and got to know route 14 St. Mary’s and Dakota very well.

After I graduated from high school and established a steady job in 1992, I was fortunate to live in an apartment on Wellington crescent. Folks ‘oooh’ and ‘ahhh” about the address but I was excited just to be out on my own. Walking and biking to work and busing to university, I also got to know route 60.

Over the next several years I lived in various apartments located within West Broadway and Osborne Village, my favourite being on Roslyn Road.

I became a home owner in 2002 and moved into my first home in Wolseley on Fawcett. I have since moved on to my current home on Wardlaw. I have done several updates and renovations as I believe in taking care of my home and investing in the future.

Coming from Amaranth, I started with no preconceived notions of which part of Winnipeg was the best. Each part of the city has its own character. Over time I have grown to love the community of Fort Rouge. It has amazing diversity, energy and potential. When I used to rickshaw, working the Corydon street festival was a highlight of the summer. But that’s a post for another day.

Where have you lived in Fort Rouge – East Fort Garry?

Welcome

Hello and welcome to my website for the 2018 Winnipeg Civic Election.

I believe very much in our community of Winnipeg and in its future potential. I have therefore as of June 30, 2018, registered as a candidate for the diverse ward of Fort Rouge and East Fort Garry. The election is scheduled for October 24, 2018. You can vote on that day or in advance polls prior to the election day.

The past 5 years have seen an amazing amount of growth and change within Winnipeg and throughout the world. We have many advantages and infrastructures that give us a great jumping off point for business, community and culture. We need to continue to properly leverage our resources to the advantage of all sectors.

With your support I will ensure that Winnipeg continues to be a progressive city now and moving forward. I am looking forward to speaking with constituents within the Fort Rouge and East Fort Garry to help identify the issues and concerns that matter most within the riding and our city.

If you would like to speak with or get in contact with me, please feel free to reach out by phone at 204-272-9555 or by email at VoteMichaelt@shaw.ca.

I welcome the chance to listen and to find out more about the issues that are important to you.

Thank you,

Michael Thompson

Personal

I was adopted by a wonderful Ukrainian-Canadian couple and grew up in Amaranth Manitoba. I initially moved to Winnipeg to begin my high school education at St. Boniface Diocesan High School. I was fortunate to meet my partner, Jill, and to welcome a wonderful baby boy together in 2012. Being a father has been a dream come true.

The war in Ukraine is a terrible event to befall any country.  I am proud of our Federal and Provincial governments for standing with Ukraine.   We should support our fellow Canadians that are supporting Ukraine and build a monument to recognize those that given their lives.

We live in an amazing community and I am willing and prepared to work hard for the residents of Fort Rouge and East Fort Garry. I truly do understand the financial, emotional and time constraints placed upon individuals and families during this day and age and I would like to make a difference for all families as a representative at city hall. With your support, early voting takes place October 3 and final day voting is on October 26, 2022, you will be giving me the opportunity help all of us.

Merci,

Michael Thompson
